Our Program

Who We Serve

Attendance Records works primarily with middle and high school youth through the Advancement Via Individual Determination (AVID) program in public schools. AVID is an elective class that works to close the achievement gap by preparing all students for high school, college, and other postsecondary opportunities. AVID classes create a sense of family and support, following the philosophy that by holding students to the highest standards, they will rise to the occasion. Many of our students are the first in their family to go to college.

What We Do

We hold weekly workshops during the school day that support creative learning. Our program is broken down into 4 major parts that ultimately lead up to the creation of an album + zine.

Creative Community

We begin each program with a series of workshops that build community, trust, understanding, and respect among students, teachers, and volunteers. Activities and topics in these workshops range from freewriting, poetry, laughter, perspective, group work, identifying music styles, making artistic and personal connections, and more! Each class is different and catered to the students we are working with. These first few classes help set the tone for the entire school year.

Songwriting & Acknowledgment

Writing is a key component of our program, providing students with a platform to find their own voice and tell us their story. This is done through a variety of enterprises such as slam poetry and performance, research and exploration of musical genres, one-on-one mentorship with local musicians, peer acknowledgment (our version of peer editing), and more. Throughout this section of our program we bring in several creative professionals in the community to help guide or teach workshops in their craft.

After students have finished their final versions of songs they have written over this time, we compile them and selectively send them to local bands and musicians. After bands or musicians choose a student song, we send over more info about their student (personality, inspirations, favorite music, etc.) so they have a better grasp on how to record and bring the song to life. Bands or musicians spend the next month recording the songs.

Art & Design

With the help of local artists, we explore how we can bring art and design to our album + zine. This includes hands-on activities such as creating album covers, producing visually appealing and thought provoking designs for our zine, screenprinting t-shirts, making buttons, taking photos, and much more. All activities within Art & Design are translated into the final album + zine project.

Album Release

We have created a community of thinkers and learners, written songs about who we are and what inspires us, worked collaboratively with local bands and musicians to record an album, designed and created artistic visuals to coincide with our album + zine, and now all that’s left to do is celebrate our success! At the end of each program we throw a Student Album Release. Our students are the first to get a copy of the album + zine they created, watch bands from the album perform their songs live, and be part of the album release experience by performing or sharing their songs on stage.
